Burglars Targeting the Elderly on the Rise
Within seconds of the encounter the masked man was pointing the gun at her and her 84-year-old husband. He told the pair that if they didn’t give him all their money he would shoot them.
In order to stop them from calling the police he ripped out the two phone lines; however, later on they were able to call their son with a cell phone.
Not only did the intruder steal their money, he also stole their Cadillac, which was later disposed of about a mile from their home in Lakeland.
According to reports, this is the third attack on senior citizens in Polk County in the last week. Two elderly women were both mugged in broad daylight. One of the women was waiting at a bus stop in Lakeland, while the second was leaving a fabric shop in Winter Haven.
Unfortunately, it seems that while times may be desperate for some there are those who choose to target individuals they believe are weaker than them such as the elderly. This is a sad case, but luckily there are ways in which senior citizens can make sure they don’t become victims in their own homes.
Purchasing a stun gun that is also a cane is a beneficial way of making sure that elderly individuals are always protected wherever they go. Even if they don’t require the assistance from a cane simply having it close by and on hand will greatly improve a person’s confidence in themselves regardless of where they are.
