Great-Grandmother in El Cajon Continues to Fight Crime

One 73-year-old great-grandmother is leading the way when it comes to tackling crime in El Cajon after numbers revealed that crime is going down.

The neighborhood watch captain who set up the committee to tackle the problems in Sector 9 said that the 73-year-old grandmother is sending a clear message to criminals in that area that she means business in helping to sort out the problems many residents have been faced with.

The organization, which is a late night patrol in Sector 9, covers around a fifth of the city. As a result of the amount of crimes occurring in El Cajon it was decided that something needed to be done.

This soon saw the beginning of the night patrol taking off with 10 neighbors on rotation and the watch captain patrolling the streets every weekend until 4 a.m. Any information they find during their patrols are then phone into a hot line that has been set up by the police.

One officer from El Cajon said that he believed the organization has had an effect on crime levels in the area. After all, when it comes to criminals they are generally searching for targets they believe are vulnerable.

However, if they realize that a certain area is willing to work and help police when it comes to reducing the amount of crime and tackling those responsible, then they are simply going to pass that area.

Figures show that there have been significant reductions in the amount of home burglaries which were down by 28 percent, while vehicle break-ins reduced by over 36 percent.
