Police Urge Residents to do More in Tackling Home Burglaries through Neighborhood Watch
Police are experiencing high concerns over the burglaries that are occurring in the area. In the 12 months leading up to March there were 769 instances recorded per 100,000 people.
The figures come after Victoria Police released the crime statistics for Darebin. While there was a decrease in the previous year on all crimes, home burglaries was recorded at a 2 percent rise.
Theft from vehicles was down by 13 percent, vehicle theft was down by 5.6 percent, assaults had decreased by 10 percent and drug offences saw a reduction of 16 percent.
Even though police could take pride in the reductions in the other crime areas, they required help from the public when it comes to reducing the amount of home burglaries. In eastern suburbs the Neighborhood Watch program proved to be an effective crime-fighting tool; however, in Darebin it seemed to be struggling to make an impact.
Since it was relaunched late last year, Neighborhood Watch had declined from 26 active groups to just one.
Of course, while measures are taken to help boost the amount of people working together with Neighborhood Watch, it is necessary for homeowners to think about ways in which they can increase their safety.
One measure that many people are turning their attention to is pepper spray. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find many people with this self defense canister on hand as it provides the perfect tool for a person’s defense.
Not only that, but because it is safe to employ it doesn’t pose a risk to either the person using it to stop an attack or the person it is targeted against.
