Berkeley Experiences More Burglaries during Summer

It’s official, it’s summertime and while many of us will be taking advantage of the longer days and the warmer temperature, it’s also a time for a rise in crime figures too.

At a recent town hall meeting, an officer from the Berkeley Police Department provided safety tips to San Pablo Park residents on how they can effectively defend themselves against home burglaries by reporting on any suspicious activity they may notice in their community.

The town hall meeting also presented the chance for residents to challenge city officials and police to play their part when it came to addressing the problems of youth nuisance and burglaries in the area.

The police department has given the neighbors their credit in helping police catch a number of repeat youth offenders. As a result, the department is encouraging residents to continue with the work they are doing by reporting any activity to police that they believe is suspicious.

One of the problems affecting residents is youth burglars who have become increasingly confident in breaking into homes during the day. However, the home burglaries are not just occurring in San Pablo Park, but have also been reported on Sacramento Street and the Berkeley hills as well.

Police explain that it is difficult for police to catch criminals without the assistance from watchful neighbors.

While the police may not know who lives where, neighbors do. As a result of this, if they should notice a person in someone’s back yard that they don’t recognize that should instantly alert them to any suspicious behavior.

In one situation a neighbor was able to photograph a burglar and sent it to the police. Because of this, police were able to identify the suspect the following day. Proactive neighbors are important to the safety of a community.

Of course, in order for homeowners to maintain their safety if they should find themselves the target of a home burglar it is important that they have the necessary steps in place.
