Economic Downturn to Blame for Rise in Home Burglaries and Muggings
According to a survey, eight out of ten cities and towns say the overall number in offenses have risen. The Government’s recently launched crime-mapping website depicted that robberies had risen in three areas and burglary had risen in six.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner explained that he was concerned over the statistics. During May there were 8,250 break-ins, a staggering number that was up from 7,667 in the last year.
In May 2010, robberies increased from 3,257 to 3,749 in May 2011, a 15 percent increase.
Some ministers have expressed their concerns that the rise in break-ins is the result of the struggling economy and could be the beginning of an economic downturn fuelled crime wave.
From February to April robbery, burglary, criminal damage, vehicle crime and shoplifting had risen by 0.5 percent to 132,824 offenses compared to last year. Earlier this month, however, Operation Target was launched, which is aimed at cracking down on violent offenders, burglars and robbers.
The six-month long scheme will include the Traffic and Mounted Branch and the Flying Squad.
The Shadow Home Secretary said that the recent figures illustrated the risk the Government was taking by the amount of police budgets cuts.
While crime figures continue to rise it is a good idea for those concerned about their safety to think about how they can improve on it. One such way is by purchasing a tornado defense system.
Not only is this self defense tool a spray canister, but it also acts as an alarm and a light as well, thus providing the user with maximum protection wherever they are.
No one should have to be the victim of a robbery or attack and by having a form of defense on hand you don’t have to be.
