Over the next four days, four extra self defense devices will be deployed, while 12 more will be in operation by the beginning of 2012.
Furthermore, there will be more patrollers who will undertake the three-day training that is required before they can employ the devices.
Once they have completed the training, officers will receive permission to wear the TASER guns on their thigh or waist, instead of keeping them locked in their car. The request for the extra self defense tools received the green light on Wednesday.
Even though there was a request to have the weapons on police at all times a year ago, recent events have forced people to re-think the advantages of having easy access to the stunning weapons when they require it the most.
With the commission authorizing Montreal police to add new self defense devices to their equipment, it will bring the total to 57.
However, most of those employing the devices will those undertaking training and SWAT. Only 12 will actually be available to the patrollers.
Of course, while this is the case, it is a step in the right direction considering that Montreal is one of the least armed cities in North America when it comes to self defense tools.
