Burglaries and Theft in East Hampton Sees Four Arrested
According to East Hampton Town Police, the men in question went through around 20 to 30 cars where they stole anything from credit cards and money, to cell phones and electronic devices.
The men involved, aged between 18-and-26-years-old, were charged with criminal mischief, petty larceny and identity theft, in addition to three felony counts of burglary and grand larceny.
A house burglary also took place in East Hampton, which saw power tools, driver’s licenses, jewelry, navigation devices and golf clubs taken.
Police were able to track down the men after purchases that were unauthorized were made on the stolen credit cards. A few of the purchases included clothes, food, fuel and services at a tattoo parlor.
Now that police have arrested the four men they have been able to recover a number of items from the neighborhood belonging to six to eight cars. According to police, it’s not surprising to find that many people in fact leave their cars unsecured.
These days, it’s just not possible for people to simply leave their vehicle doors or windows open without fear that someone will resist the temptation of finding out what’s inside to steal. If a thief sees an opportunity then they are going to take advantage of that regardless.
As a result of this, it’s important that owners take steps to ensure that they don’t become targeted by thieves. One way of doing this is by simply remembering to lock their car doors and to remove any valuables they have inside their vehicle.
Another way of making sure that they don’t become targeted is to purchase a canister of mace spray for added protection.
No one should have to be the target of a thief, but simply knowing that you have a form of defense on hand will mean that you are more confident and better able to defend yourself should the moment call for it.
