Safety is Celebrated at Annual Night Out

The most important thing that residents can do when it comes to stopping criminals from targeting their communities is to take a stand to show that they are not welcome.

This is what countless states across the United States will be doing next month during the annual National Night Out event, which starts on August 2. Local cities will also have included safety fairs, neighborhood walks and contests for residents to take part in.

Throughout the event there will be a number of police vehicles and officers as they aim to heighten crime awareness and to garner support from residents for anti-crime programs.

The South Daytona community crime prevention officer explained that we want residents to take the time to lock their doors, make sure their outdoor lights are on and to spend time in the community during the event.

The main objective is to further strengthen the neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships so that they can have a safer nation.

The first National Night Out took place in 1984, which was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch. It was introduced this way because only 5-7 percent of residents were taking part in the normal crime watch programs in their communities.

Since then it has continued to be a popular event that draws millions out.

Of course, while these are good events to help educate residents on what they can do to further increase their safety and the safety within their communities they should also think about how they can protect themselves on a day-to-day basis.
