Britons Fear Increase in Home Burglaries

British homeowners believe that there will be an increase in the number of home burglaries in the next two years. As a result of this, over-55s are leading the way by applying certain safety measures to ensure they don’t become a target.

A survey has found that the majority of Britons believe that the level of burglary will rise in the next two years. Research undertaken by Allianz Insurance found that 61 percent of people expect burglaries to rise, while 60 percent admitted that their home is not completely secure.

The survey also found that only 69 percent of homeowners locked their windows and doors and 33 percent said that they had an alarm.

The head of home and motor portfolio management at Allianz UK stated that the research depicted a clear gap between the measures people had put into place to protect their homes and how much people feared being burgled.

He went on to add that they are urging homeowners to rethink the safety measures they have in place as this can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime and can make homeowners feel a lot safer.

It was noted, however, that homeowners who are older generally take better security measures compared to younger families.

It was revealed that 77 percent of over-55s stated that they always apply their security measures, with 32 percent employing these measures even when they are at home.

In July, figures from the British Crime Survey revealed a 14 percent rise in domestic burglary in England and Wales compared to the previous year’s survey results.

Despite this, the Home Office has stressed that since 1995, a reduction of 57 percent has been noticed in home burglaries.

When it comes to increasing a person’s safety at home it is necessary for them to think of safety measures that they can put into place.
