Deputy Employs TASER Device during Traffic Stop
According to the police report, the 23-year-old woman was stopped for speeding. During the traffic stop, the deputy found out that her driver’s license had been suspended in Sarasota for failing to appear in court after being charged with resisting arrest with violence.
As a result of this, the deputy told the woman that she was being arrested and that she had to get out of the car. Instead the woman refused and asked to see a supervisor. During the stop she also used her cell phone to call someone.
During this point the deputy pulled the woman from her car and locked the handcuffs on her right wrist. Shortly afterwards the 23-year-old fought with the deputy, who was also trying to cuff her left wrist. The deputy then warned the woman that if she continued to resist arrest she would be apprehended by a TASER device.
Despite hearing the warning she didn’t stop with her resistance and as a result was apprehended by the self defense device. According to the report, the 23-year-old continued to resist after being stunned and when placed in the patrol car attempted to unsuccessfully kick out the rear window.
Nowadays, it’s not uncommon for police departments to provide their officers with a form of self defense that they can employ on duty if the situation calls for it. In this instance, not only was the female driver a risk to other drivers with her speeding, but she also had her license suspended and was refusing to comply with police orders.
In such circumstances and to avoid any harm coming to anyone further down the line it was deemed necessary for the deputy to utilize the self defense stunning tool. As they are safe to employ they provide the ideal alternative in situations where a traditional firearm wouldn’t be necessary.
