Dog Owners Receive Warning to Control Dogs

Dog owners in Melbourne have received a warning to keep their pets under control. The warning comes from the city’s animal enforcement after a dog killed a four-year-old girl from Melbourne.

The animal control manager explained that they have a very low tolerance of vicious dogs and that they had no place within the community. So far there are 11 dogs who have been declared dangerous in addition to a restricted-breed dog.

The council or owners can declare a dog to be dangerous if it causes serious injury or death to either a person or animal, or if it has been found menacing at least three times.

According to the city animal enforcement there were 69 dog attacks recorded in the last year. In most cases, the incidents involved dogs attacking other dogs who were mainly males.

In the case of the four-year-old girl, a pit bull was the breed of dog that killed her. According to police, they believe that the dog escaped its yard before entering the home where the four-year-old lived.

During the incident her 31-year-old cousin suffered bite wounds while a five-year-old received a bite on the back of the head. The community of Bendigo have a strict policy when it comes to dog attacks on humans and can result in a dog being euthanized in cases that are serious.

However, the responsibility of the animal lies with the owners as the breed is not generally at fault, but how they have been brought up by their owners. With time and training any dog can be a good dog, but any dog can also be a dangerous dog.

There are some breeds who receive a hard line because of their past history and cases that have involved them in the past, but it’s the owners who need to gain control of them for this to not be the case.
