Police Employ Pepper Spray to Break Up Fight After Notre Dame Game

A post-football game revelry took a turn for the worst in at least one location on Sunday morning.

According to Ann Arbor police they had to employ pepper spray early Sunday in order to break up two fights that involved at least 200 people, just hours after the Michigan-Notre Dame football game ended at Michigan Stadium.

Police arrived on scene at 2.40 a.m. where they dealt with the crowd when at least four people began fighting and one person was knocked to the ground. The person who was knocked on the ground was being kicked and punched. As a result of this, a police officer then employed the self defense spray canister to break up the fight.

As the officer then turned around, two other people began to exchange punches, which resulted in the officer utilizing the canister again. The people involved in those two fights left the area soon afterwards.

According to the University of Michigan police spokeswoman, post-game officers are usually very busy.

Because post-game officers are typically busy after games it is important that they have a form of defense on hand that will enable them to effectively bring a situation under control in a quick amount of time.

When dealing with crowds they need to know that they have a weapon that will reach a large number of people at once. In order to achieve this goal they rely on pepper spray to do the job they require. The self defense canister is safe to use and extremely effective in its goal, which is why there are many police departments they rely upon it for its effectiveness.

Not only that, but because the spray reaches a large number of people at once it allows police to gain control of a situation before it gets out of hand. When it comes to post-game officers the use of pepper spray means that once they have tackled an unruly crowd they can move on to other situations they demand their attention.

Without the use of this tool police would still be relying on brute force, which is time consuming when dealing with large crowds. This approach also runs the risk of injury officers and the suspects involved; however, with a self defense spray canister they can avoid that risk, while still being able to do the jobs they do.
