Bear Attack Injures Shepherd Man
The attack, which was first believed to have happened in Luce County, actually occurred in a section of Western Mackinac.
A press release from the DNR reveals that a 49-year-old Shepherd man has sustained non-life threatening injuries after a mother bear tried to make her way on his tree stand. The hunter was seated around 10 to 12 feet off the ground on Sunday evening when a female bear and her three cubs approached.
According to reports, the mother bear then climbed the tree and clawed at the hunter as he tried to kick her to protect himself against the attack. The bear retreated temporarily, but then returned for another attempt at climbing the tree to claw at him again.
It was at that point that the hunter was able to shoot the bear with his gun.
An good alternative to a firearm in this situation is bear spray. Non-lethal and safe to use it is still powerful enough to prevent a bear from attacking without harming the animal in the process. A bear who has sustained a gunshot wound is likely to wander off in pain where treatment is unlikely to be received.
However, if the self defense spray canister is employed the effects are only temporary, but last long enough for the bear targeted to retreat, thus giving the hunter enough time to make his or her escape to safety.
When travelling in areas that are known to home bears it is always a good idea to have a form of protection on hand to protect you when you need it the most. While no one wants to experience a bear attack of any kind, simply knowing that you have the means of protecting yourself will make the trip less daunting and will make you better prepared to face whatever comes your way.
A bear attack doesn’t have to be life threatening when you have put the necessary measures in place to prevent such a situation. Bear spray is the ideal answer to ensuring this is not the case. After all it is much better to have something on hand that has been designed with safety in mind rather than a firearm or nothing at all.
