Major Rail Stations Have Low Crime Levels

According to reports there are three personal offences committed every week at Central Station.

However, while this may be the case, it is thought that the crime levels on Sydney’s rail network is relatively low, with Central Station performing over 44 million journeys in 2010.

A recent report conducted by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research provided extensive information on the number and type of offences committed over the last 10 years.

The report showed that even though major stations such as Central, Parramatta, Redfern and Strathfield may record the highest number of incidents, they actually had the lowest rates when it came to personal crime.

Instead, the report went on to show that the highest rates of crime took place in outer city areas. Areas that might not have the same level of police presence, for example in Illawarra or the central coast area.

Taking all the Sydney trains into consideration, it is reported that 0.3 incidents, for instance, robbery, sexual assault, assault or stealing, take place every 100,000 passenger journeys. At stations that number rises to 0.8 during every 100,000 journeys.

The recent report comes as Sydney’s government is considering the overhauling of security arrangements on the train system. The government wants to replace the RailCorp security officers with those of police officers.

Of course, while the numbers might be low considering the high number of rail journeys taking place each year that doesn’t mean that rail users should be complacent when it comes to their safety.
