Home Burglaries Increase by 10 percent in City

According to results, Dublin tops the table when it comes to home burglaries with 42 percent of them taking place in the Dublin area.

Combined with the counties of Kildare, Louth, Meath and Wicklow, the amount of home burglaries nationwide adds up to 63 percent. In the past year, burglars managed to steal 48 million euros in home goods, taking on average just under two thousand euros worth of stolen items from each home targeted.

In Dublin, home burglaries have increased by 13 percent over 12 months with 63 percent of the break-ins taking place on the southside of the city, which was up by 10 percent from the previous year.

Those living in the north have been luckier with burglaries amounting to 37 percent, a decrease of 10 percent from last year. The Eircom PhoneWatch Burglary Report 2011 illustrated that Cork had a 16 percent drop in home burglaries and accounts for just 4 percent of the burglaries that are recorded nationwide.

The results from the report are based on 22,000 household insurance claims for 12 months between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. The report showed that November is the worst month for home burglaries to take place, while Thursday is the commonest day for a break-in to occur with 16.5 percent of them happening on this day.
