Prince George's Police Use Pepper Spray on Student Fight
The fight took place outside Friendly High School in Fort Washington after a boys basketball game.
Two Prince George’s County officers were working security at the game when they first saw the fight taking place in the bleachers. They then went over and escorted a person out of the bleachers, which soon saw around 20 people surrounding them. As a result, they had to push their way out of the crowd.
One of the officers and the person they were escorting fell down the bleachers. The second officer then attempted to help them when the crowd started closing in on them. During the incident one officer was hit on the back of the head, while a cruiser window and school window were broken.
At that point, police deemed it necessary for them to employ their self defense spray canister in order to disperse the crowd. Police then arrested one man and four juveniles. Three of the five have been charged with assault.
In today’s society it is not uncommon to find police with an array of self defense devices on hand that have been designed to better protect them. As a result of this, they know that should they require an alternative they have it with the use of the self defense canister.
It also means that the person targeted won’t come to any harm, unlike if another device, such as a firearm was used instead. In this situation brute force was not a requirement. As the officers were dealing with a crowd they required a device that would produce the instant results they needed in a timely manner.
This would not have been achieved with a firearm and would have harmed those targeted. Simply knowing that such a device is available means that members of the public can better protect themselves when they need it the most.
Regardless of where a person is they can rest assured that what they have on hand will deliver the results that they need without having to worrying about harming the person targeted.
