Sending your kids off to college is an emotional time. You are so proud of their achievements and are excited (and a little sad) that they are leaving home. They will be on their own and will learn to become independent responsible adults. We hope that the college provides a safe atmosphere to achieve this, but we know today that more and more violence is happening on college campuses. How can we ensure their safety away from home?
According to the FBI report, there were 501 acts of forcible rape, 1445 aggravated assaults and 12128 burglaries that occurred on our college campuses last year. The college campus might appear to be a safe and friendly place; however, because of the size of the campus and the nature of the students' schedules, it often provides the location and time for crime to happen. Your college kid actually has a lot of time where they are alone and vulnerable. They often stay late at the library studying, or may attend a night class at the quiet side of campus. They are extremely vulnerable when they have to walk back to their dorm or apartment by themselves late at night. All these instances are windows of opportunity for a criminal to attack.
Although most campuses have a well-lit sidewalk and a police escort service, you cannot count on them all the time. If someone is following your kid to their dorm room late at night, what would they do? Can they defend themselves if they are being attacked? It is always better to be safe than sorry.
